Save money while heating your home

Winter isn’t here yet but the cold weather is, and you may have already started your furnace. Unfortunately, the cost of heating your home isn’t getting any cheaper. So we have some simple tips to help you save money and stay warm this season.

  • Install a programmable thermostat – These are an inexpensive and great way to save money on heating and cooling your home. You can program the thermostat to stay at a lower temperature while you’re away from the house for extended periods of time, or at night while you’re sleeping, and then program it to rise to your preferred temperature just before you come home or get up in the morning. By utilizing a programmable thermostat, you could save you up to 10% per year on your utility costs. • Utilize your windows – Open your blinds or curtains and allow the natural sunlight to heat your home. And keep blinds closed on windows that don’t get sunlight to keep heat from easily escaping.
  • Minimize air flow restriction – Make sure your filters are clean. Dirty filters restrict air flow, making you system work harder and less efficient. Look for restrictions around supply air vents like furniture or curtains that keep the warm air from circulating like it should through the home. Have your system cleaned and maintained twice a year, most manufacturers recommend this because it increases the life of your equipment and helps maintain the intended efficiency.
  • Dress warm – Wear warm clothes while you’re at home and lower the thermostat a few degrees. You’ll be comfortable and cozy, not to mention it will save you money.
  • Don’t lose the heat – Check windows and doors for leaks or drafts and take steps to reduce them. Heat can escape from these areas and also bring in more cold air. Adding insulation to attic spaces, where it may be insufficient, will also help retain heat inside the home.
